In November 2018, The Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families (SCHF) released their third annual “Who’s Minding the Store? Retailer Report Card,” and included six major restaurant chains. The 2018 Retailer Report Card assigned failing grades to all six restaurant chains.

Mike Schade, Campaign Director of Mind the Store, is the co-author of the Retailer Report Card, and will speak on the Retail Engagement Panel Session on May 3 at HCPA’s Mid-Year Meeting.

The Retailer Report Card’s initial evaluation of restaurant chains focused on the companies’ failure to have publicly stated chemical policies for replacing Bisphenol A (BPA) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food packaging and contact materials. SCHF plans to add other chemical sustainability issues when it evaluates restaurants for the 2019 Retailer Report Card.

The “Mind the Store” campaign and its annual report card provides a powerful incentive for retailers to adopt and enhance chemical management policies. SCHF believes that the report card generates a “race to the top” by publicly ranking retailers. SCHF notes that most retailers that were evaluated in 2017 and 2018 improved their year-over-year scores.
