The Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA) has seen a growing number of media stories related to the dangerous misuse of pest control products such as bug spray and insect repellants, involving the spraying of these products on drugs like marijuana, spice, and tobacco before smoking them.

Insecticides and repellents protect against pests that pose public health threats including the viruses West Nile and Zika. These necessary and effective products are highly regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and extensively tested before reaching consumers and workers.

Drug abuse continues to be a devastating national problem, however continual media coverage may inspire increased misuse of these products, which is why HCPA is advising caution for the media covering these stories.

“Products like these are labeled with clear directions, and are not meant to be deliberately misused for any reason,” said Steve Caldeira, HCPA president and CEO. “They are safe when used correctly and consumers and workers should feel very confident using these products in their homes, daily activities and workplaces.”
