On May 15, HCPA held a Federal Government Relations and Public Policy speaker session during IMPACT2018. The session started with an EPA update from Nancy Beck, deputy assistant administrator, Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP). Ms. Beck spoke on the importance of PRIA reauthorization, the status of implementation of the Lautenberg Chemical Safety Act and fielded several questions from the audience, including one from HCPA President & CEO Steve Caldeira, who asked if the Safer Choice program was going to be eliminated in lieu of some Safer Choice staff being reassigned to support statutory timelines regarding TSCA implementation. Ms. Beck said it wouldn’t.

Following the EPA update, Karyn Schmidt from the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and Michael Gruber from the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) spoke about their separate proposals for federal labeling legislation they are planning to introduce in Congress. After outlining their proposals, Karyn and Michael fielded questions from the audience.
