Bennett and Georges Visit EPA with Member Companies for Aerosol Discussion

Steve Bennett, vice president, scientific affairs, and Nicholas Georges, director, scientific affairs, were joined by Household & Commercial Products Association member companies as they met with staff of EPA’s Safer Choice Program on February 8. The group discussed the inclusion of aerosol propellants in the program so that formulators have more choices when designing products while still meeting Safer Choice criteria.

HCPA’s work to reauthorize PRIA continues

The Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA III) is currently in the continuing resolution (a temporary government funding measure), which is set to expire on March 23. The recent bipartisan budget deal has paved the way for an appropriations bill to start moving. To maintain the funding required to safely and effectively register pesticides, Congress must pass another continuing resolution, which will extend PRIA III past March 23, or it must approve an appropriations package that funds PRIA IV. An additional option is to reauthorize PRIA through inclusion in the Farm Bill, which provides another potential opportunity, however, it would also present a new set of political challenges. HCPA’s Government Relations and Public Policy team will continue to provide updates on PRIA. Proposed TSCA Fees Rule Announced: Manufacturers, Importers and Processors Effected

On February 8, EPA released a pre-publication copy of the proposed TSCA Fees Rule for administration of the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act (LCSA). EPA proposed fees on “chemical manufacturers, importers, and processors would go toward the cost of developing risk evaluations for existing chemicals; collecting and reviewing toxicity and exposure data and other information; reviewing confidential business information (CBI); and making determinations in a timely and transparent manner with respect to the safety of new chemicals before they enter the marketplace,” according to EPA’s press release. Finalizing the fee rule would complete the fourth and final Framework Rules for Chemical Safety Evaluations and EPA indicated it is hopeful the rule will be finalized by the fall. HCPA is currently collecting member input to assist in the development of comments on the rule.
