Washington, DC – The Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) is pleased to announce President and CEO, Steve Caldeira, and his wife Jane, have been named the So Others Might Eat (SOME) “Humanitarians of the Year.” Steve and Jane will accept their awards at the 2017 SOME Gala on Saturday, November 18, at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
“When Father John Adams, the President of SOME, asked if Jane and I would consider accepting his invitation to be named the Father Horace McKenna ‘Humanitarians of the Year’ we were, to say the least, very surprised and extremely humbled,” Steve Caldeira said, “especially when there are so many people that have done so much for SOME over the years.”
Founded in 1970, SOME is an interfaith organization that has fed and housed D.C.’s homeless population for nearly half of a century. SOME’s “Humanitarians of the Year” award is given to individuals who have performed extraordinary work on behalf of the homeless and those living in poverty.
Steve has served on the corporate advisory board of SOME since 2012 and has been involved with the organization since 2010. He chaired the 2015 SOME Gala, which raised nearly $1.2 million dollars, a record at the time. The Caldeiras value SOME’s holistic approach to caring for those in need, and truly appreciate the organization’s comprehensive set of services that go beyond those of a traditional soup kitchen.
“In 2017, SOME’s programs have served nearly 7,500 homeless men, women and children, while also giving them a sense of worth and dignity,” Steve Caldeira said. “These services include 8,500 annual visits to a doctor or a dentist, support and care for 200 homeless adults with chronic mental illness, alcohol and drug addiction services for 240 men and women, and safe and affordable housing for 150 families with 340 children, as well as 550 single adults,” in addition to other important programs that assist D.C.’s neediest citizens.
Named after SOME’s late founder, Father Horace McKenna, the “Humanitarians of the Year” award honors those who continue the goodwill of Father McKenna, a dedicated Jesuit priest named “Washingtonian of the Year” by Washingtonian Magazine in 1977. His legacy lives on through both SOME and the McKenna Center, which is a soup kitchen and shelter for men located in Saint Aloysius Catholic Church in Northwest D.C.
