Bipartisan House legislation builds on Senate effort to provide long-term certainty for EPA’s Safer Choice program
Washington, D.C. — The Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA) applauds Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) and Scott Peters (D-CA) for introducing the bipartisan Safer Choice Program Authorization Act, legislation that would formally authorize the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Safer Choice program.
Safer Choice is a long-running, voluntary, science-based certification and labeling program that helps consumers, businesses, and institutional purchasers identify products formulated with safer chemical ingredients while maintaining product performance. The House legislation follows the June introduction of bipartisan companion legislation in the Senate by Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Jon Husted (R-OH) and represents another important step toward establishing a durable statutory foundation for Safer Choice.

HCPA has been a leading advocate for formally authorizing Safer Choice and has worked closely with lawmakers and a broad coalition of industry, environmental, public health, and other stakeholders to build support for the program.
For more than three decades, Safer Choice has supported the development and use of products formulated with safer chemical ingredients. Through the EPA’s science-based review process, qualifying products may carry the Safer Choice label, providing consumers and purchasers with a trusted tool for identifying products that meet the program’s rigorous standards.
HCPA will continue working with bipartisan leaders in the House and Senate, as well as stakeholder partners, to advance legislation that provides a strong and sustainable foundation for the Safer Choice program.
