On May 22, the U.S. section of the UK news publisher The Guardian launched a series of articles called “Toxic America.” Created to raise money for the publisher by stoking the public’s fear of chemicals, The Guardian U.S. is hoping to raise $150,000 through reader donations.

The Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA) is monitoring the articles as they are released and is coordinating with member companies and allied trades on appropriate media relations strategies.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) is featured in the article, “Internal emails reveal how the chemical lobby fights regulation,” and while the article has a clear bias, part of ACC’s response to the reporter was included in portions of the article.

…ACC spokesman Jonathan Corley, in a response to The Guardian’s queries about the lobbying effort, said critics of ACC are making “tired attempts to vilify the chemical industry to advance their advocacy goals and that ACC will continue to be a constructive participant in the discourse about these important issues.”
