On March 11, Jim Jones, Executive Vice President, Strategic Alliances & Industry Relations, participated in UL’s Advisory Council of retailers and suppliers. Jones reported that UL gathered input on whether WERCSmart could be used to help all suppliers or retailers comply with California SB 258 and New York’s ingredient communication guidance. Suppliers sought to reevaluate this idea and encouraged UL to work on a case-by-case basis with interested parties before making any changes to WERCSmart. The Council also acknowledged that smaller suppliers would be more likely to rely on WERCSmart for their compliance efforts. Retailers were noncommittal. The meeting concluded with both suppliers and retailers encouraging UL to work with interested stakeholders before pursuing further comprehensive actions.

The UL Advisory Council serves as a forum for retailers, suppliers, and UL to discuss how to most effectively meet the needs of all the parties.

HCPA members include 3M, Givaudan, Procter & Gamble Company, RB, SC Johnson, Turtle Wax, Inc., and HCPA was named as the trade association representative on behalf of the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRI), Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC). It’s very important to note that the above-mentioned allied trade associations were instrumental in asking UL to form the Advisory Council.
