Jim Jones, Executive Vice President, Strategic Alliances & Industry Relations, attended The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) May 1 and 2 in Chicago, Illinois. TSC is a group of companies and NGOs that work on issues of common interest associated with sustainability. TSC is taking over the stewardship of the Beauty and Personal Care Sustainability Project (BPC). The BPC was a project of Forum for the Future that involved a couple dozen manufacturers of personal care products, retailers and environmental NGOs. The objective is to develop a harmonized approach to evaluating the sustainability of a personal care product to avoid a situation where every retailer takes a different approach to evaluating sustainability thereby putting undue burdens and costs on suppliers.

Several HCPA members participated given their prominence in the personal care products sector. HCPA is interested in this work given its potential, if not likelihood, to “migrate” into the household and commercial products we represent. TSC announced that they will share the results of the BPC in the next few weeks. We expect that it will involve about 32 questions that a supplier would answer that addresses various aspects of a product’s life cycle (energy, packaging, waste, and chemical safety). TSC has agreed to host a webinar to educate HCPA members on the BPC this summer. Finally, TSC said that it will be up to retailers to decide how/whether/when to start using the BPC.
