Jim Jones participated in the GC3 Innovators Roundtable May 8 through 10 in Kingsport, Tennessee. HCPA member company, Eastman Chemical Company, was the host of the 13th Annual GC3 Roundtable. GC3 is an alliance of companies throughout the supply chain (from basic manufacturers to formulators to retailers) as well as NGOs interested in advancing green chemistry, and includes numerous HCPA members. GC3 also hosts a group of retailers through the Retailers Leadership Council (RLC). The RLC met before the conference but numerous retailers, including Target, Lowes, and Staples participated throughout the meeting. There was also a session on the status of the preservatives challenge GC3 has managed for the past several years.
Recognizing the lack of new preservatives for formulated products and pressures from NGOs and regulators, GC3 members convened a group to issue a challenge to innovators for preservatives for cleaning and personal care products. Over 49 submissions were made that were evaluated for safety and efficacy by the group. Before the conference started, the 7 finalists were invited to talk with the sponsors, which included several HCPA members. GC3 hopes to select the winners who will receive prize money totaling $75,000 in the coming weeks.
