The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received a resubmitted petition from the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) requesting that the agency require manufacturers of floor coverings and coatings to label their products and provide point of purchase information regarding slip-resistance. The petition is mandating that they will use the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B101.5–2014 Standard Guide for Uniform Labeling Method for Identifying the Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (Traction) of Floor Coverings, Floor Coverings with Coatings, and Treated Floor Coverings (ANSI B101.5). CPSC is accepting written comments on the petition until August 6. The Floor Care Division originally opposed the petition and is currently developing comments in opposition in part because the proposed requirement would not benefit, and could potentially mislead, consumers and workers resulting in the potential for the petitioner to unduly benefit from mandating their own standard.
