On March 21, Allyson Azar, Manager, State Government Relations & Public Policy, submitted written comments to the Washington House Environment and Energy Committee in opposition of SB 5135. This bill would authorize the Department of Ecology (DEC) to restrict priority chemicals and consumer products that are significant sources of the chemicals themselves. The intent of the legislation is to protect the region’s orca whale population after a task force identified toxic contaminants as one of the key threats to their population.

HCPA is opposed to this measure because it lacks opportunities for industry stakeholders to provide meaningful and timely input to DEC when they are making these decisions that lack comprehensive scientific review.

Please contact Allyson Azar, Manager, State Government Relations & Public Policy, at aazar@thehcpa.org for additional comments or questions.
